Abstract

Patients with liver cirrhosis are at risk for malnutrition and the majority of them are malnourished for number of reasons, as nausea, anorexia, fat malabsorption, diminished nutrient intake, hypermetabolic state, inadequate synthesis or absorption of micro and macronutrients, meal induced abdominal discomfort, and dietary protein restriction.
Malnutrition can lead to hypoalbuminemia with worsening of ascites, neutropenia with decreased resistance to bacterial infections, and weak cough with predisposition to pneumonia, at the end the researcher can conclude malnutrition is associated with a poorer outcome, as it determines life quality and increased morbidity and mortality rates. Therefore early diagnosis by nutritional assessment and intervention for malnutrition is an important issue in the clinical management of liver cirrhosis. Hence, the purpose of this study was to assess nutritional status among patients with liver cirrhosis at the medical department, Minia University Hospital.
The subjects of the study included a100 adult male and female patients with liver cirrhosis aged from 18 to 65 years; the study was conducted at the Medical Department, Minia University Hospital. The criteria for subjects’ inclusion were that each subject shouldn’t have hepatic coma, renal failure, hypertension, diabetes mellitus or cancer, and have willing to participate in the study. The data collection phase was completed between October and March 2010-2011, two different tools were utilized for data collection including (tool I) Personal and Medical Data Sheet, (tool II) Nutritional assessment sheet including Four parts:
(A) Risk factors affecting nutritional status,
B) Anthropometric measurements,
C) Biochemical measurements and
