Abstract

maternal behaviour in five selected pregnant Jenny asses was studied . The most observable behaviou-ral traits which occur during the pre-parturient period were overactivity, Restlessness, discomfort, pawing the ground with the fore feet, licking , vocalization., flanking, profuse sweating of the hind quarter of the animal and flehmen response.
Jenny asses were usually parturated in recumbent position at 1-3 o’clock a.m. Expulsion of the foetus occurred within 15-19 minutes after the appearance of the water bag.
The post-parturient behaviour had the characteri-stic of expulsion of placenta within 29-47 minutes after 20 - 40 minutes recumbency period.
The vital relationship between the dam and its neonate was immediately developed after birth . It began with licking which was started within 2-7 minutes after birth and continued intensively during the first post-parturient hour. The dorsal surface of the foal consumed about( 35 %) of the licking time followed by shoulder ( 20 % ), both head and perianus (15 %), umbilical area (10 %) and limbs ( 5 %).
The nursing care of the dam animal to her foal’s body was gradually declined after the first day except the umbilical area which was continuously cared by the mother until it completely healed.
The development of the neonatal activities began after the upright stance of the foal and in the form of several nuzzle events 46-70 minutes after birth to detect the udder.
Foals which were usually in close association with their mother began to suckle them 74- 106 minutes after birth. The average number of suckling bouts were gradually declined while their duration time increased after the first day.
The total protein concentration in the blood sera of the studied Jenny asses was 6.22 to 7.1 g/di.
The concentration of the albumin and globulin were flactuated before and after parturition. A
concentration of the albumin from (2.18 - 2.74 g/dl)
to ( 2.77 - 2.84 g/dl) and globulins from ( 3.67 -
4.42 g/dl ) to ( 2.54 - 3.19 g/d1) were recovered in the blood sera of the animals before and directly after parturition respectively.
The values of globulin was greatly increased from 0.19 - 0-28 to 1.1- 1.32 g/dl in the blood sera of the newly born foals within 24 hours after suckling colostrum.
