Abstract This study evaluated the repair response during 180 days after implantation of a small perichondrial piece of the last true right rib into 3.8 x 5 mm osteochondral defects. The latter were drilled into the center of the trochlear groove of the distal extremity of the left femur of 15 adult dogs. The same technique was performed on the right stifles and the defects were left empty without grafting (control). The repair process was evaluated grossly and histologically at 45, 90 and 180 days according to the time of sacrification after implantationGross evaluation revealed that, complete filling of the defects with hyaline -like material was achieved after 180 days in the grafted defects. While at 45 days, the grafted defects were incompletely filled with non- glistening fibrocartilagtinous tissue. These were incompletely filled with hyaline-like repair tissue at 90 days post-operation. All the grafted defects became regularly circular and their diameters were decreased from 3.8 mm to 3.2 mm at 45 days, 3 mm at 90 days and reached 2.5 mm at 180 days post-operation. The control defects were incompletely filled even at 180 days post- operation. The filling tissue was fibrocartilage which hasn’t the same characters of hyaline articular cartilage. All the non-grafted defects became regularly circular and their diameters were decreased from 3.8 mm to 3.6 mm at 45 days, 3 mm at 90 days and remained 3 mm at 180 days post-operation. |
