Abstract

Two field experiments were conducted at the Farm of Environmental Studies and Research Institute – Sadat City in the two successive seasons 2008/2009 and 2009/2010 in order to study the effect of intercropping of onions , garlic and faba bean on tomato crop in three intercropping systems i. e. : 1 tomato: 1 of other crops, 1: 2 and 1: 4, in addition to pure stand agriculture from each of the previous crops and under conditions of nitrogen fertilization in three levels, namely, 40, 80, 120 kg nitrogen per Fadden. The experimental layout was conducted in randomize complete block with split split plot design with three replications. the most important findings of the study are: -
5.1. Tomato crop
5.1.1. Effect of intercropping on tomato characters
Intercropping systems varied significantly in their effects on plant height(cm), number of green fruit / plant , number of red fruit / plant , fruit weight / plant, fruit Yield (g)/plant and fruit Yield (kg)/fed in both seasons while number of branches / plant did not affected significantly by intercropping.
Intercropping tomato in 1: 1 system resulted in the tallest tomato plants comparing with the other systems, but less than the pure stand plants. Intercropping lead to increase the number of green tomato fruits /plant in the comparison with the tomato pure stand. The intercropping in 1:1 also produced the highest fruit weight / plant over all other systems but less than the pure stand plants and this result are true in the two seasons.
