Abstract

In recent years the quality of service delivery has become an important focus of attention for every one employed in health care. Nursing staff development is a vital business within the division of nursing, and must define its scope to include its service, staff and system. This study aimed at developing a nursing procedures’ manual for nurses working in the intensive care unit at National Heart Institute. The study was carried out in intensive care units in the National Heart Institute. Two groups of subjects were included in the study. First group were experts’ group served as jury to assess the validity of the procedures’ manual. The total number was (37) experts from different settings. The second group was (30) nurses having up-to two years of working experience. Three tools were used to collect data; first, a questionaire sheet which is directed to the staff nurses working in the intensive care units. Second, is an opinionaire sheet which is directed to the jury group. Third an observation checklist which is directed to evaluate the performance of the staff nurses working in the intensive care units in the National Heart Institute. The study results showed validity of the procedures manual from experts’ point of view. All nurses have an adequate level in all procedures related to infection control and hygienic procedures immediately after using the procedures’ manual; while only one nurse (03.3%) has adequate level in the procedure of hand washing before using the procedures’ manual. All nurses have adequate level in all procedures related to cardiovascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, and urinary systems immediately after using the procedures’ manual; while none of the nurses has adequate level in the procedures related to the same systems before using the procedures’ manual. the highest percentage of nurses (83.3%) have adequate level in five procedures related to administration of medication before using the procedures’ manual; while all nurses have adequate level in the procedures related to this item immediately after using the procedures’ manual. The results of the present study concluded that, all nurses agreed about all procedures performed by nurses in the intensive care units except urine glucose test. The jury agreed upon the validity of the proposed procedures’ manual. The nurses’ performance about the procedures performed in the intensive care unit before using the nursing procedures’ manual was not satisfactory, but immediately after using the developed procedures’ manual the results showed highly significant improvements in the level of nurses’ performance. Based on the findings of the present study, the following recommendations are suggested: Nurses working with cardiac patients in the intensive care unit especially post open heart surgeries must be trained prior to work. A system of promotion and incentives should be applied based on nurses’ level of performance. Dissemination of the procedures’ manual for all cardiac specialized centers.
