Abstract

The red palm weevil, Rhynchophorus ferrugineus (Oliver) is a serious pest of cultivated palms. All insect stages were foundspend their life span within infested trees and many generations passed in the same palm. Therefore, neither the grubs nor the damage caused can be seen directly. Over time, a brownish viscous liquid with specific odourcan be seen oozing from small holes in the trunk. Most of the attack by the weevil is discernible only when the palm has been extensively damaged. Timely action for the control of this insect is made difficult by the absence of any visual symptoms of infestation. By the time, the insect attack becomes discernible and irreparable damage would already have been done. The present work throws more light and clarifies the following points
