Abstract

Among the natural occurring waters, seawater is only
electrolytecontaining a relatively high concentration of salts. It is
boththe most familiar and the most severe of natural corrosive
agents.
Corrosion is the destructive attack of metals by chemical or
electrochemicalreaction with its environment. The electrochemical
mechanismof corrosion shows that the rates of anodic and
cathodicprocesses are independent and that either or both may
controlthe rate of corrosion. Literature survey on the work done to
studythese processesin seawater helps in better understanding of
corrosionandthe waysof combating it.
Part I: Cathodic and Anodic Processes
Occuring on Steel in Seawater.
Severalmechanisms for the cathodic and anodic processes,
occurringon metals in aqueous media, are reviewed by Shreir

1.cathodicprocess on metals in aqueous media
The reduction of the H30+ ion in acid solutions or the H20
moleculesin neutral and alkaline solutions are the common
