Abstract 1.1. Slow Neutrons: This thesis presents a study for the interaction of slow neutrons with solids through application of the time-offlight technique, to study their small-angle-scattering from metals and powders. The slow neutron energy range includes the thermal region, in which the energies are of the order of 0.1-0.005 eV, and• cold neutron region of energies from 0.005 eV to 0.001 eV. Neutrons whose energies are much less than 0.001 eV are occasionally described as ultra-cold(l). It is important to note, however, that the phrase ”slow neutrons” is frequently used to describe neutrons with energies up to 1000 eV, but we shall restrict our attention (2) to the energy range just defined. The de-Broglie wavelength of such neutrons is greater than -9 10 cm. The low energy and relatively long wavelength of such neutrons govern their interaction with matter. This depends on the atomic structure of the target material because the wavelength of slow neutrons is of the order of the interatomic distances. It also depends on the atomic dynamics in the scattering medium where the energy of slow neutrons. |
