Abstract

This report deals with the intermediate range of planning with the target of solving the production planning problem under the lot sizing circumstance by developing a mathematical model aims to determine how many end i.tems to be produced within specified time periods. Briefly, the objective of this report is to develop a Master Production Schedule MPS that meets demand at minimum cost.
This report addresses the problem of developing an MPS on a rolling horizon basis for a process industry environment with single production line and minimum batch-size production restrictions. The MPS problem is presented as mixed integer linear programming, by considering most of the production requirements.
When applying to a steel rolling mill, the results obtained from the model when compared with the company actual performance during the period from April to June 2011 showed an overall 25% cost savings. Analysis also indicates that both the production and inventory were much smoother than those actually achieved by the company.
The model described in the report is limited to the rolling mill plants, while the production problem inside the integrated steel plants is an opening problem with large potential of obtaining substantial benefits in other areas of the plant.
