Abstract

The research reported in this thesis aimed at developing structural beams consisting of permanent U-shaped ferrocement forms filled with different types of heavyweight core concrete to be used as a viable alternative to the conventional reinforced concrete beams. The research focused on utilizing precast permanent U-shaped ferrocement forms for construction of reinforced concrete beams; besides, investigating the potential of using
heavyweight, and environmentally friendly core material as replacement for the conventional concrete core. The developed system may lead to economical and environmental benefits in the construction industry.
The main objectives of the conducted research were:
(1) To investigate experimentally the viability and effectiveness of the proposed precast UShaped ferrocement permanent forms and the effect of the test parameters on the behavior of the reinforced concrete beams cast in U-shaped ferrocement forms.
(2) To investigate the viability of using industrial heavyweight materials like air cooled slag and natural heavy weight materials like Basalt for the core with the aim of producing heavyweight structural system and environmentally friendly system with respect to the required mechanical and physical properties of conventional heavyweight concrete made from other heavyweight aggregates like barite.
The main test parameters in the current investigation were:
(a) Type of steel mesh used to reinforce the permanent ferrocement U-shaped forms. Two types were investigated namely; expanded steel mesh and welded wires mesh.
