Urban settlements in upper Egypt witnesses, the emergence of random urban extensions - in a large horizontal expansion, which lack the necessary services - exceeded its limits of the urban borders, in different directions, at the expense of the agricultural area. Upper Egypt suffered (in general), sand the Nile Valley province of Assiut - study area - (in particular), the absence of a clear vision for the regional urban communities network, which have had the greatest impact on migration to major urban centers such as Cairo, Alexandria, and some other urban centers which have more interests.
Hence, This research tries to conceptualize a proposal to build a network of urban settlements in Upper Egypt in the light of the economic, social, and modern scientific variables, that have occurred in each of the settlements of urban and rural areas. As well as activating these existing urban settlements to take advantage, and the exploitation of the desert, which has the ability to secure the extension, and not inconsistent with the objectives of planning at different levels.
That is why the research studies the current situation of Upper Egypt to determine the magnitude of the urban problem and its didderent repercussions, stemming from a comprehensive analysis of available potentials, limitations, problems, current and future needs, according to the different environmental conditions, and regional linkage among them. Then the research assumes the premise for building a network of the future urban settlements (cities and villages) as a case study in Assiut Governorate.
The study consists of seven chapters, First one reviews, the regional urban’s theories and strategies. Chapter II reviews, Experiences of communities to build a regional urban network. Chapter III reviews, The regional urban stusies and development dimensions of Upper Egypt. Chapter IV reviews, The regional analytical studies in the study areas as an example. Chapter V reviews, A proposal of the future features for the regional network of urban communities.
