Abstract

In this thesis the wear of high speed steel cutting tools, and surface finish under different cutting conditions such as speed , and feed rate are measured . The study is extended to investigate the effect of machining time on tool performance in face and slab milling . T optimum cutting conditions in milling process for minimum tool wear and good surface finish under different cutting conditions for face and slab milling operations are obtained. The material used in the experiments varies from soft to nearly medium to hard. The material selected are, aluminium alloy, medium carbon steel, and nodular cast iron as cast and treated.
The study includes also the change in the machinability of nodular cast iron as cast and after changing its microstructure through heat treatment operations, machined under different cutting conditions, and the obtained results are compared with that are found for steel specimen under the same cutting conditions.
An investigation of the wear of milling cutter through a theoretical model with assumptions abstracted from the practical knowledge of metal cutting theories, to obtain an equation of milling tool wear as a function of several parameters. Comparing the results which are obtained from the theoretical equation to that reached in the experimental work, a reasonable agreement is achieved.
