Abstract

Proximal ureteral stones are common urological problem that face urologists. Many different treatment modalities are present including conservative treatment, SWL, retrograde and ante grade URS, laparoscopy and open ureterolithotomy.
However, SWL and URS are considered the mainstay in treatment of proximal ureteral stones.
This study included 40 patients presented with proximal ureteral stones to the urology department, Minia University Hospital; 25 patients of them underwent SWL using the modularis litho-vario siemens lithotripter and 15 patients underwent URS using pneumatic lithoclast.
Stone free rates for URS was 93.3% while SWL stone free rate was 60% after 1 sl session and 80% total SWL success rate.
URS is more effective than S WL in treatment of proximal ureteral stones from the initial procedure with the advantage of less number of procedures before reaching stone free.
URS showed more postoperative hematuria and SWL showed more postoperative renal pain, however no major complications in either groups.
URS carries the risk of anesthesia and the risk of stone migration rrom the proximal ureter.
