Abstract

DS is a relatively common chromosomal disorder. It is due to extra copy of the chromosome 21. The exact etiology of it is unknown but; it is believed to be due to advanced maternal or paternal age, virus infection high parity, contraceptive use, smoking, alcohol, exposure to irradiation or pesticides during pregnancy.
The affected child shows characteristic features and usually have associated diseases and different congenital anomalies in the different body systems especial cardiac anomalies, hematological, immunological neuropsychiatric disorders, endocrine, GIT and respiratory diseases.
All of these anomalies and diseases received much interest of the researchers and now they are well known and can be managed . The sexual development, associated congenital anomalies of the genital organs, sexuality, reproductive disorders and STIs of these people did not receive such attention as the other body systems and few researches in this regard were found.
So, we aimed by this work to investigate the congenital anomalies of genitalia, sexual maturation and pubertal disorders, sexuality and reproductivity of DS males.
To approach our goal; 21 DS males aging 21 - 28 years and a group of 21 healthy, age matched volunteers as - a control group- were selected and included in the study.
The results showed - compared to control - that :
1- Both of maternal and paternal ages were higher at time of pregnancy of DS patients.
2- DS males are markedly obese and showed higher BMI.
3- DS enter full puberty and become full sexually mature but later than the healthy peers.
4- The only congenital anomaly reported in DS in this study was cryptorchidism, which was recorded in (14.3%).
5- More than half of these patients (57.1%) were sexually active masturbate, attracted to the other sex and have the desire to marry.
6- Although semen analysis was not done for DS group, but they showed significant elevation of FSH and LH denoting marked corruption of their spermatogenesis.
7- DS showed elevated prolactin level.
8- They showed markedly lower serum total testosterone level.
9- Serum estradiol was normal.
