Abstract

The aim of the study was to compare the serum levels of high-density lipoprotein and homocysteine in healthy pregnant women and women with preeclampsia/eclampsia.
The study was carried out at Ain Shams University Maternity Hospital, during the period from May 2006 till June 2007. It included 50 pregnant women in their third trimester admitted to the hospital being not in labour, divided into two groups:
Group I: (the control group)
It include 10 primigravida with healthy uncomplicated pregnancies served as controls.
Group II:
It include 40 primigravida admitted to the hospital with the diagnosis of preeclampsia.

Both groups were compared to each other regarding the following parameters:
1. Age.
2. Gestational age.
3. Systolic blood pressure.
4. Diastolic blood pressure.
5. Mean blood pressure.
6. Urine proteins.
7. Homocysteine level
8. HDL level.
In the current study, there is no statistically significant difference between groups I and II, as regarding age and gestational age at delivery.
But there is statistically significant difference regarding systolic BP, diastolic BP, mean BP, urine protein, homocysteine level, and HDL level.
In group I, there is no statistically significant correlation between homocysteine level and age, gestational age, systolic BP, diastolic BP, mean BP, urine protein, HDL level.
And also no statistically significant correlation between HDL level and age, gestational age, systolic BP, diastolic BP, mean BP, urine protein.
In group II, regarding homocysteine level has statistically significant negative correlation with HDL level, and significant positive correlation with systolic BP, diastolic BP, and mean BP. But no significant correlation with age, gestational age and urine protein.
Regarding the HDL level, it has statistically significant negative correlation with systolic BP, diastolic BP, and mean BP. But no significant correlation with age, gestational age and urine protein
In conclusion:
The most important finding of this study was that a significant and strong negative correlation exists between the level of homocysteine and HDL in pre-eclamptic/eclamptic women.
