Abstract Drilling fluid (mud) is an important element in the drillmg of oil and natural g’is wells in the whole world The principle function of the mud is to clein the bottom of the wells from the cuttings, to cool the rig bits, to reduce the drill pipes stuck and to control the formation and the hydrostatic pressures One of the most important characteristics of the drilling fluids is to prevent leaking in the well foi mations Also, the lost cuculation is one of the biggest contributors to drilling non productive timc and ruins the specification olthe drilling process This woik includes thiee chapters which aie the introduction, the expeiimental the results and discussions followed by the deducted conclusions In this work, six copolymers were prepaied fiom sodium and potassium aciylates Both salts individually were copolymerized with acryl amide, methacrylic acid and acrylic acid at different ratios The monomer reactivity ratios foi the copolymei ization reactions of both of acrylate salts with acryl amide methacrylic acid and acrylic acid, in solution with azobisisobutyronitrile (AIBN) as initiator, were estimated by atomic adsorption analyzer The chemical structure was confu med by atomic adsorption spectroscopy and FT-JR spectroscopy and the molecular weights of the produced copolymers were determined by Gel Permeation Chromatography. The prepared copolymers were investigated as loss circulation control materials by measuring different filtration parameters such as spurt loss, fluid loss and permeability plugging tester value accoiding to the Ameiican Petroleum Institute (API) standard from the obtained data, it was found that the 0 6% of the poly [PA co AlvI) (04 06) exhibited the best results of the filtration parameters among the othei copolymers At the same time all the studied copolymeis enhanced the rheologicil properties of the di illing mud These results wei e discussed on the light of the swelling capacity of the copolymers. The main conclusions of this svoI It nn be di awn in the followinij points o The lost circulation control materials performance depended largely on the rheological behavior of the mud. • The filtiation characteristics weie enhanced by increasing the molar ratio |
