Abstract Due to the increase of world population, there is wide need to increase protein production in the world. Aquaculture and mariculture possess the greatest potential for production of animal proteins. Aquaculture and fishery-stocking programs are increasing the importance of the world economy owing to the increasing use and consumption of fish products. The successful production of faster growing, feed-efficient strains of fish and resistance to diseases have a major impact as an important source of protein. Many investigators have taken up the challenge to alter the genetic make up of fish to improve their characters. It has become possible in the last few years to introduce new genes into the germ line of fish. This offers opportunities to increase the genetic improvement of economic livestock of fish. Another opportunity with transgenic animals (animal with introduction of genes) is to develop stocks with novel attributes, products or traits (Lathe et al., 1987) which represent qualitative and quantitative changes. |
