Abstract

In the case of digital relays, input signals are converted into digital form within the analogue input system before being analyzed by the processor. Digital relays possess advanced programmable functionality providing high performance level, flexibility as well as additional monitoring capabilities. At present, their application is mainly in transmission system and generation unit protection.
Digital relays are the last generation relays. Based on microprocessor and software, these devices are applied mainly in transmission system and generator unit protection but their applications grow rapidly with the advancements in microprocessor and communication industries.
Digital Protection Relays are critical elements in any power distribution subsystem. In order to avoid catastrophi~ failures, these relays should employ high-speed and high-accuracy electronics. A comprehensive hardware solution has been proposed in chapter 4 by using Texas Instruments’ vast portfolio of analog solutions and embedded microcontrollers.
Selecting, setting, and commissioning of new multifunction digital relays offers unique challenges to the user. The advantages of numerous relay functions being available in a single hardware platform are offset to some extent by the need to provide for the failure of [hat platform. Also, it makes testing more difficult.
