Abstract The diameter of the stem increased by 3.36% and 6.8% in response to the application of 50 and 100 ppm kinetin. These increases are statistically significan-t at 5% and l~ level respectively. An increase in stem diameter in response to kinetin applications have been reported for peas (Katsumi, 76) and apple (Poll, 122). Catarino (32) has shown that kinetin treatment increased the length and diameter of the flower stem in Bryophyllum diagremontianuITl. Branch Number The basal branches of Adonis plants W8re markedly increased in the first seGson by 10.26% and 13.85%, l4.87~ and 17.44% in response to kinetin treatments at in basal branches led to a pronounced increase in the total branches number. Similar results have been reported for apple trees (Williams and Billingsley, 164), chrysanthemum and geranium (Carpenter and Carlson, 28, 29) and carnations (Mynett, 112). The increase in the number of branches in kinetin treated plants may be due to the effect of cytokinins on the apical dominance. It has been reported that application of cytokinins overcomes the apical dominance (Chovjka et aI, 38 and Williams and Stahly, 165). |
