Abstract Abstract Title: The Effect of Using a Suggested Program Based on the Six-Trait Writing Model on Developing Essay Writing and Critical Thinking Skills of First Year English Majors. Researcher: Mohamed Ali Mohamed Mohamed Kassem. Institution: New Valley Faculty of Education, Assiut University. The main objective of the present study was to investigate the effect of using a suggested program based on the six-trait writing model on developing essay writing and critical thinking skills of first year English majors. The study used the one group pre-post test design. Thirty students from first year English majors at the Faculty of Education, Assiut University, were randomly chosen to participate in the study. Tools of the study included a questionnaire of the six-trait writing model to determine the skills included in the suggested program, a suggested writing program based on the six-trait writing model, a test of essay writing skills, an analytic scoring rubric of EFL essay writing based on the six trait writing model, Watson – Glaser’s critical thinking appraisal (the Arabic version), and a students’ satisfaction questionnaire. The experiment lasted for ten weeks. Results showed that using the suggested program significantly improved the students’ essay writing and critical thinking skills. It was recommended that the six-trait writing model should be used in designing and teaching writing courses for EFL learners at the college level. Suggestions for further studies are provided in the light of the results of the present study. |
