Abstract

Helicobacter pylori is the mean loading cause of peptic ulcer, gastritis and associated with gastric carcinoma, MALT lymphoma witch establish H. pylori infection as a leading gastroenterological public health problem.
Several modes of transmission of H. pylori have been described these include direct contact between subjects which is considered the most common mode, contaminated water sources and food and less commonly iatrogenic transmission (during endoscopies and dental care).
The potential for transmission of infection during a gastro intestinal endoscopy is a matter of concern to both physicians and patients. Fortunately, such transmission is very rare.
This study aimed to assess the prevalence of H. pylori infection among health care workers in endoscopy unit and evaluation of Infection control measures in endoscopy units.
This study was carried out on 90 person divided into three groups, 30 health care worker in endoscopy units in Ain Shams University Hospital ,30 health care worker outside endoscopy unit and 30 as control from the administrative department.
All subjects of this study underwent full clinical history, full clinical examination and detection of H. pylori by serological testing to detect IgG.
This study has included three endoscopy units to be evaluated according to Egyptian infection control measures and its effect on the prevalence of H. pylori.
The result of our study revealed that no significant difference in the prevalence of H. pylori between health care workers in and out endoscopy unit and administrative department.
As regard the prevalence in the three endoscopy units, it was inversely related to the total compliance to infection control measures.
In conclusion, H. pylori infection is a worldwide disease with many modes of transmission and has gastrointestinal and extra gastrointestinal manifestation. So eradication therapy is recommended. Further studies should be done on a large number of endoscopy units to more accurate assessment of the acquiring infection via endoscopy or not.
