Abstract

A variational method is used to solve Schrdinger’s equation for triton, assuming a two—body interaction between the nucleons, in order to find an approximation to the binding energy for the ground state wave—function.
Ibis latter is expanded in terms of 4 states, of even quanta of excitation, and the matrix elements of the Ramiltonian between these states are evaluated, using an I. B. M. computer. The interaction is charge— independent and has a Gaussian radial dependence. The states are functions of the orbital and spin angular momenta of the nucleons, described in terms of internal vector coordinates9 the centre of mass motion being removed. The functions are symmetrised by means of Young operators in order that the complete wave—functions are totally antisymmetric.
A 4 x 4 matrix is set up and the least eigenvalw and corresponding eigenveotor is minimized with a parameter occuring in the states.
It is found that hhe approximate value for the binding energy of II equals 3.16 Mev. which is in agreement with the results obtained by other authors, using different approaches.
