Abstract

In the last decade, there has been an increase need for the development of novel materials for use as specific gas chromatographic stationary phases. Although capillary columns are capable of refined separations, limitations exist and can be seen in the difficult separation of certain mixtures. This necessitates the application of specific new stationary phases that are either mixtures of existing functionalities or newly developed compositions.
Polysiloxane and its derivatives have been widely used as stationary phases in gas chromatography. This is because of their good thermal stability, good oxidation stability and the ease with which it can be functionalized. Fundamental methods of chromatographic characterization of the prepared phases help for the optimization and understanding of the separation behavior of the prepared stationary phases.
On the other hand nanoparticles have been used recently as stationary phases in gas chromatography for many purposes including the improvement of selectivity, chemical stability and separation efficiency of chromatography. Nanoparticles have unique properties- they possess a large surface to volume ratio which makes them important in separation science.
