Abstract Incidence of undesirable outcomes with general anaesthesia is more in infants: higher incidence (three times) of cardiac arrest was reported in children compared to adults. Cardiac arrest occur due to perioperative laryngospasm, difficult intubation, pulmonary aspiration or drug overdosage. Infants younger than 1 month old have the greatest risk for perioperative complications because they are more likely to have major surgery and sicker than older children. Prematurity further complicates general anaesthesia. Adequate knowledge of the anatomy of the area along with appropriate indications and knowledge of complications will facilitate the use of peripheral nerve blocks in children. The significant anatomical variations between infants and older adolescents and adults must be known. CT guided mechanisms and the use of other imaging techniques including ultrasound have led to better understanding of the anatomy of infants and children This has facilitated a more accurate placement of needles in children with less risk of complications. |
