Abstract

A five-compartment lab-scale Anaerobic Baffled Reactor (ABR) was constructed of prespex with internal dimensions of 50 cm long, 24 cm width and 25 cm height to treat glucose-based synthetic wastewater having COD concentrations up to 14400 g/m3 corresponding to an OLR of 4.8 KgCOD/m3 d. COD removal efficiencies ranged between 92 - 98% were recorded.
Three different initial loading rates were investigated by Specific Methanogenic Activity (SMA) to determine best initial loading rate based on constant sludge volatile solid concentration. An OLR of 1.8 KgCOD/m3.d was found to be best for startup the treatment process with.
In addition, numerical simulation of the ABR was conducted using the widely recognized Anaerobic Digestion Model No. I (ADMl) together with the corresponding GPS-X software. Dynamic simulation was carried out to predict reactor performance during changing in HRT and shock loads.
All in all, the anaerobic Baffled Reactor proved to have great stability and buffering capacity due to its compartmentalization which separates different microbial phases allowing each consortium to grow with optimum conditions.
