Abstract

Objective: To determine the incidence of candiduria in a neonatal intensive care unit and
to evaluate which of studied risk factors has the highest risk of candiduria in Cairo
University also to give an idea about complications.
Study design: A prospective study was conducted on 50 neonates to detect hospitalacquired
neonatal candiduria in Cairo University NICU during the period from
September 1, 2008 to February 28, 2009 by urine sampling using sterile catheters and
culture of the sample for Candida.
Results: Sixteen neonates out of fifty (32% of cases) showed Candida spp in urine
analysis. Most of them are Candida albicans (68.75% ). Some antibiotics combinations
are associated with increase incidence of candiduria such as Ampcillin /Sulbactam&3rd
generation Cephalosporin.
Conclusion: Candida spp. was identified in 32% of hospital-acquired candiduria in
NICU. Candida albicans were the most common isolated species. No significant effect of
gestational age on appearance of Candida in urine. Further studies are needed to explain
why some antibiotic combinations are associated with candiduria and some of them show
low incidence.
