Abstract

A laboratory experiment was laid out in the Laboratory of Agronomy Department, Faculty of Agriculture at Mansoura University during the period from April to May 2012 to study the response of some forage sorghum (Sorghum vulgare var saccharatum, (L) Moench) cultivars to germination under salinity stress conditions and to confirm the seedling growth performance to examine a range of genetic variability for salinity tolerance among forage sorghum cultivar. Treatments were arranged in factorial experiment in randomized complete block design (RCBD) with four replications. Fifty randomized seeds in each treatment for each cultivar were allowed to germinate on a filter paper in 9 cm diameter Petri dishes and moistened with salinity concentrations. The experiment was carried out for 12 days at 28 ±1 ºc for germination. The experiment included two factors; the first factor included three forage sorghum cultivars shown as follows: The experiment included two factors; the first factor included three forage sorghum cultivars shown as follows:1- Mabrouk, 2- Pioneer 858, 3- Horas. Two of the studied forage sorghum cultivars i.e. Mabrouk and Horas were brought from Department of Forage Crops, Agricultural Research Center, Ministry of Agriculture and Land Reclamations, Egypt. While, Pioneer 858 was brought from private seed company in Mansoura, Egypt. The second factor included 8 salinity levels of (NaCl dSm-1) as follows: 0, 3, 5, 7, 9, 11, 13, and 15 dSm-1. from the obtained results It can be concluded that increasing salinity is associated with decreases in all the studied characters, germination or seedling parameters. To maximize forage sorghum germination percentage and seedling parameters under salinity stress, Confirm achieving by using Horas cultivar due to its tolerance to high salinity concentrations and surpassing other cultivars in giving the highest values of all the studied characters. This cultivar was more tolerant to salinity up to 15 dSm-1 NaCl and is proved to limit and reduce salinity effects on germination or seedlings growth of forage sorghums .Thus, it is recommended to use Horas cultivar in breeding program for enhancing forage sorghum production in Egypt under saline conditions.
