Abstract

Low birth weight is one of the main risk factors for infant morbidity and mortality .when considering a fetus that is small for its gestational age, it is important to differentiate whether this is due to intrauterine growth restriction (IUGR), prematurity or other constitutional factors.
Two groups of pregnant women at delivery are included in this study they were randomly selected from the primary health care centers and hospitals in selected areas:
1st Group is women who got low birth weight neonates (birth weight was less than 2.5 KG) 2nd Group is women who got normal birth weight neonates (birth weight was equal or more than 2.5 KG)All pregnant women were be interviewed after delivery and were be subjected to probably designed questioner that emphasize Sociodemographic risk factors, Medical risks before pregnancy, Risks of the current pregnancy, Multiple pregnancies, Health care, Environmental and behavior risk, Nutritional frequency questionnaire.
• It could be concluded that LBW is a rather frequent significant health problem in Egypt.
• Incidence of LBW among studied group in selected hospital and 1ry health centers in Shebien El-Kom district was 5.3%
• Risk factors found to be associated with LBW in selected hospital and 1ry health centers in Shebien El-Kom district were maternal illiteracy Bad maternal nutrition, urban residence, multigravida,last delivery birth interval less than 2 years, multiple pregnancy, gestational hypertension, anemia, maternal weight(<75.4 KG), female gender newborn, prematurity and previous caesarian sections.
