Abstract

The Nosocomial infections had been proved that it is one the most cause of morbidity and mortality in NICU and PICU. The Nosocomial infection morbidity and mortality in units (NICU, PICU) of Ain Shams University Hospital were higher than similar units in Cairo University. Hand rub is the most feasible procedure in the guideline of controlling it. In the present work, we conducted a self administration questionnaire and direct observation of adherence rate pre and post an intervention in both NICU and PICU. The intervention was well organized educational program, which contained power point presentation, on the spot training peer education technique hanging signs and posters, spreading advertising products as pens with logo and slogan, conducting competition between nurses preparing suggested protocol to be followed regarding hand rub. We found that, the adherence rate in NICU was 12% then increased to be 18.8%, in PICU was 0.8% then increased to be 9.2%, which was a high significant difference between pre and post intervention, another high significant difference between NICU and PICU in both pre and post intervention. This study suggests that an effective education program can improve hand hygiene compliance, what is most suitable program to be followed in units of Ain Shams University Hospital and what are the challenges which could face it.
