Abstract

This study was undertaken to determine the effect of high protein diets and vitamin C on the iron status of kidney transplanted patients (KTP) injected with erythroprotien hormone. Thirty four male kidney transplanted patients were studied. Patients were randomly selected out of those subjects to kidney transplantation operations in Wadi EI-Nile Hospital in Cairo. Patients were allocated to either an erythroprotien hormone (EPO) with high protein diet plus orange juice, regular protein (n = 18) or treated with high protein diet plus orange juice ,regular protein ( n =16). These results showed that high protein intake contribute to improve hemoglobin (Bb) and hematocrit (Ht) and affect iron marker especially in case of non using erythroprotien hormone. No significant change of blood glucose level after kidney transplant patients. No statistical significant difference in the cholesterol, high density lipoprotein (HDL) and triglyceride (T.G) levels among the four tasted groups. However, there was significant difference in the low density lipoprotein (LDL) levels (P < 0.05). Also, the marker of kidney function for all groups especially in non using erythroprotien hormone was improved. This study concluded that the post transplant anemia (PTA) is common, nutrition factors are potentially important in the etiology and management of post transplant anemia especially in case of non using erythroprotien hormone. This study recommend that Patients before kidney transplantation operation should be injected with erythropoietin hormone to Improve hemoglobin level according to instruction of physician. Vitamin C at level over 100 mg should be taken with protein diet over 1 gm / kg of body weight at the early post transplant period to improve hemoglobin, hematocrit level and iron marker since it protects from post transplanted anemia. It must be advised to adhere the healthy dietary pattem to help in treatment or reducing the risk of post transplant anemia.
