Abstract

Qat chewing is a habit Prevalent in Yemen and East Africa. The young leaves of Catha edulis are chewed and left in the vestibule in bolus from for some hours.
Investigation of the chewing habits reveals a continuous, age related increase both in the number of qat chewers and in the frequency of qat consumption. All age groups, far more men than women chew qat .
Qat chewing habin is associated with increased level of calculus index, plaque index, periodontal pocket depth and bleeding on probing.
The destruction recorded on the periodontal tissues us is due to specific chewing and oral hygiene habits in widespread practice among the Yemeni population.
This study was conducted on one hundred adult Yemenis, qat chewers who have the habit of qat chewing for at least ten years who were selected form the out patients clinic, period ontology Deportment, Faculty of Dentistry, Science and Technology University – Sana’a.
All patients were clinically, bacteriologic ally, histopathologically examined and the changes in the periodontium and buccal mucosa of the vestibule at the site of qat chewing habit were recorded and compared with the other side (non- qat chewing Sid).
