Abstract

Most periodontal diseases are inflammatory conditions affecting periodontal tissues. It is well documented that periodontal inflammation could be initiated and maintained by certain periodontal pathogens.Microorganisms could produce periodontal inflammation either by direct effect of bacterial products or indirectly by provoking both inflammatory and immunologic reaction. Many cytokines are produced by cells in the periodontitis lesions, among them and the most important one is interleukin-1.It is aproinflammatory multifunctional cytokine, secreted by many cells. It has several functions including, the ingress of inflammatory cells into site of infection, promote bone resorption, simulate the release of matrix metalloproteinases that degrade proteins of the extra cellular matrix and participated in many aspects of the immune response. The aim of the present study were to measure the amount of IL-1B IN THE GCF in adult and early onset periodontitis and to correlate this amount with the degree of tissue destruction measured by;pocket depth, attachment loss and degree of gingival inflammation. One hundred and thirteen subjects were included in this study. They were grouped into 4 groups;group one included 17 subjects with plaque induced gingivitis, group two included 39 subjects having aggressive periodontitis, group three included 33 subjects with chronic periodontitis, and group four included 24 subjects as a control group. For all subjects gingival index, plaque index, probing pocket depth, and clinical attachment
