Abstract Day case ophthalmic surgery under local anaesthesia has been shown to be safe and is associated with the least disruption to the patient’s normal daily activity. Regional anesthesia is commonly used for ophthalmic.surgery. Peribulbar injection of local anaesthetic agent is one of the techniques of anaesthesia in cataract surgery. It is used to achieve akinesia and anaesthesia of the globe. It involves injection of the agent into the extraconal space in a compartment which is confined centrally by the muscle cone, laterally by the periosteum and bony wall of the orbit, and anteriorly by the orbital septum and conjunctiva. This method of block was developed to avoid some of the complications associated with retrobulbar anaesthesia in which the agent is deposited in the intraconal space. So peribulbar anaesthesia is the technique of choice for the majority of patients undergoing cataract surgery as it is safer than retrobulbar block because the needle is not inserted inside the extraocular muscle cone. The choice of anaesthesia depends on a number of factors, including patient psychology, the particular features of the globe and the orbit, the anticipated surgical difficulty and the experience of the operating surgeon. |
