Abstract

Alexandria deserves a high degree of environmental lwarness, since it is the second largest city, a popular loliday and tourists resort, especially in summer, encom¬pasing about 40% of Egypt’s industry, the first harbour, and provides the Egyptian market with a considerable supply Df fish. As a result of increased population size and industrilization, the city sewage network became in the last few years overloaded and even emergency rainfall out¬falls could not help in reliefing the burden or the city sewage. Disposal of sewage into the sea through the two main outfalls: Qait bey (735 m offshore) and El-Mex (shore line) and the near-shore emergency outfalls, resulted in a heavily polluted aquatic ecosystem facing the city. This greatly reduced its attractiveness for holidaymakers and tourists, as well as increased health hazards for Alexan¬drians.
A great dispute resulted from people advising on dis¬posing sewage into sea water, but through extended outfalls others advised on disposing on land west of Alexandria. Both were alternative solutions for the pollution problem
which gained serious public concerns. Solutions could not be accepted and applied unless assessment studies on the environmental impact of each solution is carried out.
