Abstract

In spite of advances in the health care system, the threat to hospital - acquired infections still remains worldwide. The prevention of transmission of any pathogen to the patient and/or health care workers is based on the strict application of standard precaution measures, and practices. Failure to employ correct practices has been responsible for increased incidence in hospital acquired infection. Thus, the education of a hospital personal is an essential element in prevention and control of hospital acquired infection. Aim: To determine the impact of health education on infection control measures in operating theatres. Setting: the study was conducted in different ORs at Tanta University Hospital. Sample: the study sample was consisted of all available number of nursing personnel (66 staff nurses and 24 auxiliary workers). Tools: two tools were used for data collection. 1) constructed questionnaire sheet, which divided into two parts, A) assessment schedule questionnaire for nurses. B) Interview schedule questionnaire for auxiliary workers. 2) Observational check list was developed to assess the performance of nurses and auxiliary workers. Results: The main results revealed that, the nursing personnel knowledge and performance related to infection control measures in operating room were inadequate before educational program implementation. There was statistical significant improvement in nurses and auxiliary workers’ knowledge and performances related to infection control measures in OR immediately after health education intervention, but performance level slightly decreased three months post the intervention for two groups. Non of the nurses or workers attend in- service training courses or educational program related to infection control measures in OR. Non of the nursing staff was checked for blood borne pathogen or was vaccinated against HBV. Conclusion and recommendation: Implementation of health education program has a positive effect on nursing personnel knowledge and performance related to infection control measure in OR. It-was recommended that, establishment of in-service training program for health team member work in OR. Continuous supervision assessment and evaluation of nurses’ performance related to infection control measures. Developing of immunization program and periodic checkup for all personnel work in OR.
