Abstract

Colorectal surgery including ostomy is one of the most therapeutic maneuvers all over the world. Ostomy means that, surgical opening that serves as an exit site for fecal matter. It is one of the lives saving procedure for many conditions as CRC, intestinal obstruction, inflammatory bowel disease, chronic divertuculitis, and bowel injury. Ostomy patients may experience physical and psychological complications regarding to the formation of stoma. Recently, there has been awareness of S.C in relation to ostomy patients. S.C is a practice of activities that individuals initiate and perform on their behalf in maintaining life, health, and well being, also is a requirement of every person. The nursing has foundation in helping people to meet these requirements, and also the nurse has the challenge and responsibilities to help patients gain the knowledge, skills, and attitudes necessary for S.C.

The study was carried out in order to assess S.C practices among adult colostomy patients.

The following tool was utilized and developed by the researcher in order to collect the necessary data based on related literature: (Self- care Practices Ostomy Assessment Sheet), it entailed of three parts: Part (I), Concerned with Bio-socio-demographic data. While Part (II), was identified, translated by (Abu-Elfadle and Ali) then modified and adapted to the Egyptian culture by the researcher to assess the patient’s SC activities. It includes 7 structured parts related to (Universal Self- care Activities), to meet daily physical and psychological needs. The activities assessed will include: respiratory and circulatory status, nutritional status, eliminatory status, physical activities, rest and sleep, personal appearance and hygiene, and social interaction.
