Abstract

The multiple disorders that may affect skeletal mineralization have a wide variety of metabolic, neoplastic, endocrinologic, and iatrogenic casues. One of the most common is osteoporosis due to diminished estrogen levels in post menopausal women and women who have under gone oopherectomy.(16)
The process by which osteoporosis becomes established is often gradual and subtle. It frequently remains unrecognized until a variety of complications, including compromising and occasionally life threatening fractures occur (16)
The National Osteoporosis Society of The United Kingdom, states that more women die from fractures caused by osteoporosis rather than of cancer cervix, uterus and breast combined together. (17)
There are no routine methods of assessing the strength of the skeleton in individuals, but bone mass is the major determinant of bone strength and many methods are available to estimate this (18.19~

relationship among many factors contributing to bone strength.
One important factor in this determination is the amount of mineral in the bcn.e.{1D)
Measurement of bone :nineral content may help to differeniat patients likely to de”/elop osteoporosis from age -sex matched individuals.(14)
Evaluation of bone mass by means of a simple, accurate, and widely available method therefore constitutes a valuable tool that will be useful in the initial diagnosis of osteoporosis and the monitoring of its treatment. (16).
It is important to select the appropriate measurement technique or combination of techniques in an individual case. So that suitable information can be gathered to strengthen patients management descion.(21)
This study assess bone mineral content in normal lumbar vertebrae using Quantitative Computed Tomography(QCT) at different age groups.
All of the 104 studied cases, 54 males &50 females were Egyptian healthy volunteers. There age ranged from 20 -70 years, with a mean of 45 years. All of them subjected to Quantitative Computed Tomography (QCT) to their lumbar spIne.
