Abstract The aim of the work is to: 1- Measure the serum and amniotic fluid levels of interleukin-6 (IL-6) in preterm and term delivery. 2- Find the relation ship between this cytokine and the onset of labour in term and preterm parturition. Conclusion: On the basis of this study conclude that women delivering spontaneously either at term or preterm delivery had significantly higher levels of maternal serum and amniotic fluid IL-6, compared with those who, were not in labour and who had an elective caesarean delivery at term (37-40 weeks gestation). Also it is obvious that the highest level of IL-6 in maternal serum and amniotic fluid culture. Therefore it is of great importance to use this assay as screening test for predicting intraamniotic infection which later may result in spontaneous preterm birth in high risk women. Thus reducing the indications for invasive procedures and improving the selection of women who may benefit from tocolytic and antibiotics. Further studies are required to determine whether measurements of cervico vaginal IL-6 can be used as a test for prediction of preterm labour and intraamniotic infection. |
