Abstract

Orthogonal Frequency Division Multiplexing (OFDM) is a multi-carrier modulation technique which divides the available spectrum into many carriers. OFDM has been used as a modulation as well as multiplexing technique in most of recent communication systems. Some of these systems are Wi-fi, WiMAX, WLAN, DVB, DAB, and LTE. So the study of OFDM system and how to develop it has become very important. This thesis aims to; (i) study the performance of OFDM system without optical fiber channel, (ii) study the performance of optical OFDM system, (iii) compare the simulation results for these systems, (iv) implement the optical OFDM system on a reasonable hardware, and (v) compare the software simulation and hardware emulation results. There are many different hardware strategies to implement OFDM system as; ASIC, Micro-Controller, DSP, PLC, and FPGA. Using FPGA as a hardware strategy we got; (i) reprogrammability, (ii) flexibility, (iii) very good prototype, (iv) high speed processing, (v) short time to market and reasonable cost. To solve the OFDM channel problems we have used optical fiber channel instead of wireless channel. Wireless channel has many disadvantages as; (i) high channel delay, (ii) large channel noise, (iii) limited channel bandwidth, and (iv) bad security. Using optical fiber channel we could overcome most of wireless channel problems. In the future we recommend with using optical fiber channel instead of wireless channel for all of the recent communication system. Also we recommend to use FPGA in the hardware implementation due to its advantages stated before.
