Abstract This work was carried out to study the frequency of Clostridium infection in foal diarrhea and also study the diagnosis and typing of C. perfringens by both traditional methods and by multiplex PCR and the evaluation of α-toxin of C. perfringens type A by ELISA. By collection of fecal samples from both diarrheic and apparently healthy foals, Clostridium spp. isolated with incidences of 30% and 7%, respectively. C. perfringens and C. sordellii were isolated alone from diarrheic cases with the incidences of 8% and 2%, respectively and C. perfringens isolated in mixed form with C. sporogenes, C. sordellii ,C. bifermentans, C. tertium and C. butyricum with the incidences of 2%, 8%, 2%, 4% and 4%, respectively, C.difficile not isolated. The result of multiplex PCR for the isolated C.perfringens from diarrheic cases give types A, B, C and D . ELISA results indicated that α-toxin in diarrheic foals was higher than apparently healthy foals. In conclusion, the work reflect the importance of C. perfringens as main infectious cause of diarrhea in foals and in the same time it’s a normal microflora of the gut of horse. |
