Abstract

Breast cancer is a cancer that forms in the tissues of the breast usually the ducts and lobules, world wide it is the most common form of cancer in female and the second most common cause of death on women and its incidence still to increase. Treatment of breast cancer involves combination of different modalities surgery, chemotherapy, radiotherapy, and hormonal therapy. Adjuvant chemotherapy is often given after surgery to destroy any micrometastatic cell that may invade the bloodstream or lymphatic circulation early, so reduce the possibility of recurrence or relapse and improve survival. The breast cancer and its treatment have a lot of distressing side effects. Chemotherapy is the most stressful experience; it affects the patients’ health and alters their quality of life.
The four domains of quality of life, physical, psychological, social, and spiritual, are compromised as a result of chemotherapy side effects. Complementary therapy such as progressive relaxation technique helps to decrease side effects of chemotherapy and improve quality of life.
The aim of the present study was to determine the effect of progressive relaxation technique on the quality of life of mastectomy patients receiving adjuvant chemotherapy. This study was carried out in the oncology out-patient clinic of Alexandria Main University Hospital and Health Insurance Hospital (Gamal Abd-Elnaser). A sample of one hundred adult female patients who had a mastectomy and were receiving adjuvant chemotherapy; age between 20-60 years; Stage I, II, III free from metastasis were included in the study. They were divided equally into study and control groups, 50 patients in each group. Patients having metastasis, and chronic diseases were excluded from the study.
