Abstract

The present investigation aims to:
(i) Preparation of carbons from Date Pits which represent an agricultural waste in Egypt.
(ii) Activation of the prepared carbons by using different percentages of zinc chloride and phosphoric acid.
(iii) Characterization of the obtained carbons by using different methods.
The content:
The thesis contains 142 pages involved 33 figures, 6 main tables and 4 chapters. In addition to the Arabic and English abstracts.
Chapter I: Introduction:
This chapter contains introduction involved many previous studies and researches which related to the present investigation.
Chapter II: Experimental:
This chapter contains the methods of preparation and characterization of the carbon samples .Furthermore, the methods used for determination of adsorption capacity of the prepared samples by adsorption of methylene blue and Cu+2 ions from their aqueous media.
Chapter III and IV: Results and Discussion:
These chapters involved the results obtained and discussion for them. They can be abstracted as follow:
1-Zinc chloride activated carbons and phosphoric acid activated carbons are characterized by their acidic surfaces and their acidity depends on the nature and the amount of activation agent used in the activation process.
2-The surface and the total pore volume of the resultant activated carbons increase of the amount of activating agent used in the process of activation to reach a maximum at activating agent/ precursor ratio 1:1 and then decreases with further increase in the ratio from 2:1 to 3:1.the main percentage of pore are from micro type and pore dimension were (10 <r (Å)<15).
3- The data indicated also that the prepared carbon samples have high adsorption capacities for adsorption of methylene blue and Cu+2 form their aqueous media. The adsorption capacity decreases with the rise of the adsorption temperature.
