Abstract

Two medicinal plants of importance in folk medicine in Saint Catherine protectorait (Origanum syriacum and Salvia multicaulis) were selected for this study.
Floristic and vegetation analysis, in addition to screening of the environmental differences affecting the abundance and distribution of these plants in the study area were done.
The extracts of the wild and cultivated plants were evaluated for their antioxidant and antimicrobial activity. Water extract was the highest in antioxidant activity for O. syriacum. The cultivated plants were found to be slightly higher than the wild ones. 80% acetone extract showed the highest antioxidant activity for both wild and cultivated plant of S. multicaulis.
Through this study, there were a correlation between the increase in the antioxidant activity and the increase in the percent of flavonoid compounds in the extracts. That could prove the role of flavonoids as antioxidants.
The antimicrobial potentials of the wild and cultivated O. syriacum and S. multicaulis plants extracts were examined against several pathogenic species. The 80% acetone extract was found to possess the broadest antimicrobial spectrum. The MIC, MBC and MFC values of the extracts were estimated.
Through the chromatographic separation of the active extracts, the obtained fractions that have elevated antimicrobial and antioxidant activity were analysed using LC-MS-MS for structural elucidation of the active constituents responsible for their activity. The results obtained verified the rich and diverse flavonoids content. That might be responsible for the activity of these plant extracts.
