Abstract The present study aimed to evaluate the accuracy of blood and milk progesterone assay, trans-rectal ultrasound examination and rectal palpation of uterus for early pregnancy diagnosis in cows. Eighty eight inseminated cows were used to conduct this study. Blood and whole milk samples were collected on Days 21 and 28 post-insemination and progesterone was assayed using enzyme immunoassay. Trans-rectal ultrasound examination was applied using 5.0 MHz linear array transducer on Day 28 post-insemination. Rectal palpation was applied on Day 42 post-insemination. Pregnancy was confirmed on Day 75 post-insemination. The cut values of progesterone for pregnancy diagnosis were 3.0 and 3.3 ng/ml in case of blood and 1.4 and 2.25 ng/ml in case of milk on days 21 and 28 respectively. Sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, negative predictive value and accuracy for blood progesterone assay were 100%, 27.3%, 57.89%, 100% and 63.64% respectively on Day 21 post-insemination and 100%, 45.5%, 64.71%, 100% and 72.73% respectively on Day 28 post-insemination. |
