Abstract The human thumb represents certainly the most important digit, since its opposition ability greatly separates humans from lower primates. Thumb injuries constitute a challenge for the plastic surgeon because the loss of its function, even its sensation, compromises the function of the entire upper limb. Thumb injuries are classified as either component injury or thumb amputation. Component injuries include finger tip, tendons, bone, ligaments and/or nerve injuries. The losses of thumb length from amputation also classified as partial and complete. Adequate length, position, and stability are the mechanical requisites, while, strength, movement, and sensibility are the physiologic desires for a successful thumb reconstruction, additional requirements include an acceptable esthetic appearance. The choice of method for reconstruction of the thumb depends among many factors upon level of injury, functional deficit, patient’s needs, cultural considerations, and available surgical skills and facilities. The restoration of a functional thumb after traumatic injuries has been addressed by many hand surgeons; many surgical efforts to reconstruct a thumb also have been conducted corresponding with its importance in hand function. |
