Abstract

Our study was carried upon forty one patients with B-thalassemia, attending the Pediatric department of Suzan Mubark EL-Taamen hospital, ElMinia Govenorate and ten apparently healthy children age and sex matched. They were classified into 3 groups:
- Group I (A): included 33 Patients with B-thalassemia major.
- Group I (B): included 8 Patients with B-thalassemia intermedia.
- Group II : included ten apparently healthy children , age and sex matched served as the control group.
All groups were subjected to full history taking, clinical examination, laboratory investigations which included complete blood count, liver function tests (Albumin, Alanine aminotransferase(ALT), Aspartate aminotransferase(AST) and Alkaline Phosphatase) , serum Frrittin , serum Calcium, serum Phosphours and serum level of Parathyroid hormone (PTH).
By this study, we found that there were statistical significant differences between all groups regarding to serum Calcium, Phosphorus and parathyroid hormone where serum Calcium and parathyroid hormone were statistical significant lower in group (I) than group (II) & in group I A than group I B, and serum Phosphorus was statistically significant higher in group (I) than group (II) & in group I A than group I B. Moreover, comparison between group IA and group IB regarding to hypoparathyroidsim, serum ferritin, revealed that they were statistically significant higher in group I A than group I B.
Moreover, in our study we found that there were moderate significant positive correlation between PTH and serum Calcium level, moderate significant negative correlations between PTH and serum phosphorus and ferritin levels and weak significant negative correlation between PTH and frequency of blood transfusion.
In conclusion, Hypoparathyroidism was more frequent among thalassemic patients and subsequent low serum Ca in those patients manifested by bone tenderness and pathological fracture in some of them. This could be explained by deposition of iron in parathyroid gland due to frequent blood transfusions and improper chelation therapy.
