Abstract

Efficiency of marine diesel engines at best cases is 50%. This value of efficiency was seen as practically impossible up to that date, were attained. Nevertheless, a target still remained to recover the majority of energy lost through the exhaust gases. So began the application of waste heat recovery systems on ships since the early eighties of the last century because of its significant impact in providing fuel for ships, as well as reduce the amount of exhaust gases emitted by ships. This study reviews the definition of the Waste Heat Recovery (WHR) system for marine diesel engines and the statement of the positive effects of its application.
The research contains the most important requirements for waste heat recovery system, as well as the most important factors that affect these systems and their economical and environmental benefits. Also, the different components of the waste heat recovery systems are presented. Further more it deals with the process of assessing the equipment used for waste heat recovery systems. It has been illustrated how to analyze the WHR systems and study the environmental and economical impacts of waste heat recovery system. Finally, the recommendations and conclusions of this study have been presented.
