Abstract The M.Sc thesis entitled ”Analytical Applications of Bagasse (Sugar Cane Industry Waste) As A Natural Solid Phase Extractor For Separation of Metal Ions from Aqueous Solutions” The thesis compnses three mam chapters. The first chapter is the introduction, it consists of two parts. The first part introduces the background of sugar industry and the contents of sugar cane bagasse (as a waste product of sugar industry). Also, introduce the application of raw bagasse, fly ash and activated carbon for separation and/or removal of metal ions, pesticides, dyes and colors processes. The second part of this chapter discusses the modification of bagasse physically or chemically using organic compounds for removal of metal ions and color processes. Moreover, it reviews the using microwave -in absence of toxic organic solvents- as a new modification method saving time and energy. The second chapter is the experimental: This chapter describes the processing and details of the analytical methods . FT-IR spectra analysis of SCB before Fe(III) sorption was showed: an absorption beak at 3403.7 cm-1 indicating the existence of free inter-molecular bonded hydroxyl groups and the presence of strong C-O band at 1058.7 cm -I due to -OCH 3 in addition to the peak at 1704.8 cm-I for carboxylic group. from FT-IR for SCB after Fe(III) uptake, it was found that, oxygen containing functional groups vis, -OH, -OCH3, and heOOH are shifted to 3406.6, 1046.2 and 1682.6 cm-I, respectively. The results indicate the participation of these groups via oxygen for Fe(III) binding to SCB . . The data obtained from percentage extraction of SCB under the batch equilibrium technique as a function of pH for the metal ions: Ca(II), Fe(III), Co(II), Ni(II), Cu(II), Zn(II), Cd(II), and Pb(II) showed the following: - At low pH values (pH< 2.0) SCB showed very low tendency for uptake of all the investigated metal ions due to protonation of its functional groups or competition of H+ with metal ions for binding sites. -Metal uptake capacities of metal ions at different pH values are 15.5% at pH 5.0 for Co(II), 86.0, 70.0% and 87.0% at pH 6.0 for eu(II), Cd(II) and Pb(II) respectively and 81.0% at pH 7.0 for Zn(II). |
