Abstract

The knowledge of the soil fauna is very necessary for dealing with the world-wide problems such as soil erosion, decomposition of vegetation, litter and soil fertility (Otal•c, 1992; Whitford and Pm·l•er, 1989; Tadi’Os, 1976 and Ta«lros et a f., 1995). Many factors such as. (a) soi I properties including orga1uc matlcr. pi I. electrical condnctivity. (h) agricnltnral pr:Kticl’s. (soil krti li ty. i rrig, ation. ti II age and rotation) and (c) mctcorolog,i cal l~1ctors (soi I temperatures, soil moisture. air temperature and relative humidity arc responsible 11tH” either its number in soil and/or soil fertility. Soil mites arc one of the dominant groups of animals inhabiting soil, and comprises the large fraction (Abd-Allah, 1974; Zaher et af., 1975; l<anlar, 1976; Abo-Kor·ah 1979, 1982, 1984 a,b; Tadr·os 1985; Sharshit· 1986; Ghazzy 1989 a111l Cameih et af., 1995). from an economic point of view. many investigators discussed the importance of soil mites in forest soils. Middleton (1987 < Conteanx et af. (1994) and Walia and Mathur, 1994) conside1ed these gmups as an important factor in improving soil properties. particularly as they burrow long, branching, channels in the superficial layers of the soil and make very minute soil crevices which facilitates root penetration and air through the soil structure (Sharshit· 1986; Gmneih et af., 1995 ami Tad1·os et af., 1995). It was also stated that a lot ofOribatid species which constitute a reasonable fraction of soil arthropod l:lllna arc fungi feeders (Tnuh·os, 1973 In addition, some oribatid mites are beneficial since some investigators.
