Abstract

This study critically investigates the type of discourse and the dynamics
behind each discourse in two popular, literary works- The Haj (1984) by Leon
Uris, and The Map of Love (1999) by Ahdaf Soueif. To examine the racist
discourse in The Haj and its possible links with the racialized social systems in
Western societies, the study employs an interdisciplinary analytical framework
that includes critical discourse analysis and other theoretical approaches. This
complementary CDA framework helps investigate the linguistic devices, and the
discursive argumentation strategies used by a writer to convince his target reader
of his group’s ideologies. It is argued that Uris’s discourse is manipulative.
Through this discourse, the writer exercises a form of illegitimate influence on his
reader.
